The Salamander Story

The origin of Salamander can be traced to a single man who was a war hero, Mr. Bruce Sundlun, and also a business man and leading politician.  During WW II, while flying his 13th mission as a B-17 bomber pilot, Mr. Sundlun’s plane crashed over Nazi-occupied Belgium.  For months he evaded capture by crossing into France and Spain until he was recruited by a resistance group waging war against the Germans, The Maquis, and was given the code name of Salamander.  What is a Salamander? A secretive amphibian that leads a double life on land and in water.  In literature and in legend, it is associated with fire and is supposedly unharmed by the flames.

Mr. Sundlun’s returned to the US and purchased a 200-acre estate in Virginia and named it “Salamander” after his old underground name.  Later on, he decided to sell the farm and retire to Rhode Island with his family.  Our Founder and CEO, Ms. Sheila Johnson was very inspired by his story and discovered that for centuries the salamander has symbolized Strength, Courage and Fortitude, which are traits that she has identified with throughout her personal and business life.  Ms. Johnson decided to purchase the estate and expressed interest in renaming the property.  Mr. Sundlun granted permission for the name “Salamander Farm” to be restored to the estate and Ms. Johnson continues to expand the use of “Salamander” in her business.
